Our Hybrid-IT team provides operational and project-based services to NEC and our customers.
These services include:
- Operational monitoring and management of AWS cloud infrastructure and workloads.
Design, deployment and optimisation of AWS IaaS and PaaS services.
Cloud-native DevOps enablement including CI/CD pipeline implementation.
Infrastructure as Code (IaC) provisioning using Terraform and AWS CloudFormation.
Cloud security, governance, cost optimisation and operational management.
Integration of AWS services with enterprise platforms including identity, networking, backup and monitoring solutions.
Public Cloud delivers and operates shared and dedicated AWS cloud platforms and services for NEC and our customers.
These services are provided for government and non-government customers, utilising automation via Cloud Native orchestration, DevOps tooling and Infrastructure as Code methodologies.
With growth in our team, we are now seeking a Senior AWS Cloud Engineer to take on a key role in our Melbourne team.
This role will be based on-site at the customer location.
Primary Accountabilities
This role will be responsible for providing technical direction and leadership for AWS cloud infrastructure hosting platforms within a customer environment.
With a strong focus on delivering fit-for-purpose, repeatable, cost-effective, secure, stable and scalable AWS platforms with defined services, SLAs and performance metrics.
You will be called upon to design, implement and enhance standardised AWS service offerings and customer environments, leveraging DevOps and Agile practices.
In addition you will:
- Work with Solutions Managers, Architects and Customer Stakeholders on the creation and adoption of AWS roadmaps and strategies to define standard cloud service offerings.
- Participate actively in Agile ceremonies including Sprint Planning, Daily Stand-ups, Backlog Refinement and Retrospectives to continuously enhance AWS capability.
- Define and implement end-to-end AWS cloud operations and delivery processes, leveraging Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), CI/CD pipelines and GitHub-based workflows wherever possible.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to ensure high service availability, resilience, security and cost optimisation across AWS environments.
- Lead incident management activities for major AWS-related issues and promote a proactive operational support model.
Key Accountabilities
Service Ownership
- Provide technical leadership to define and evolve AWS cloud processes, standards and services.
- Utilise operational and financial metrics (e.g. CloudWatch, Cost Explorer) to drive continuous service improvement and optimisation.
- Ensure adherence to security, compliance and governance standards within AWS environments.
Technical / Delivery Leadership
- Work closely with Solutions Managers, Architects and DevOps teams to define and improve AWS services delivered to the customer.
- Design, build and maintain AWS infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform as primary toolset, supplemented by AWS CloudFormation where appropriate).
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub and GitHub Actions (or equivalent), integrating automated testing, security scanning and deployment workflows.
- Deliver relevant technical solutions, lead AWS best practices and be responsible for technical governance across projects and supporting services.
- Provide technical leadership within Agile project environments to ensure sprint deliverables are achieved on time and within scope.
- Identify and manage technical risks, assumptions and dependencies within customer AWS environments.
- Drive automation and orchestration into every operational and delivery process.
- Facilitate the automation of AWS resource provisioning, networking, IAM, security controls and monitoring configurations via Terraform modules and reusable code patterns.
- Provide technical review of AWS solutions for Architecture Review Forums and customer governance boards.
- Produce Detailed Design documentation for AWS platform services and customer-specific solutions.
- Ensure DevOps principles are embedded across the full lifecycle of AWS services.
Service Cost / Unit Price
- Drive standardisation and consistency through Infrastructure as Code and DevOps practices to deliver measurable cost savings.
- Lead cost optimisation initiatives including right-sizing, reserved capacity planning, tagging strategies and FinOps practices.
- Advise and drive efficiencies within AWS platforms – both technically and operationally – to reduce total cost of ownership.
Support / Operations
- Act as a primary technical escalation point for major AWS incidents within the customer environment.
- Maintain a strong understanding of IT Service Management processes including change, incident, problem and release management.
- Work collaboratively within Sprint cycles to prioritise operational improvements and technical debt reduction.
- Mentor and uplift team capability in AWS, DevOps and automation practices.
Key Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated experience in a Senior AWS Cloud Engineer role building and operating enterprise-scale AWS environments.
- 5+ years’ hands-on experience with core AWS services including (but not limited to) EC2, VPC, IAM, RDS, S3, EKS/ECS, Lambda, CloudWatch and AWS Organizations.
- Proven experience migrating on-premises infrastructure and workloads to AWS, including assessment, planning, execution and post-migration optimisation.
- Demonstrated experience modernising application workloads within AWS, including re-platforming, refactoring, containerisation, serverless adoption and cloud-native architectural patterns.
- Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform (primary) and AWS CloudFormation.
- Experience implementing and managing CI/CD pipelines using GitHub, GitHub Actions (or equivalent DevOps tooling).
- Solid understanding of DevOps methodologies, version control practices, branching strategies and automated testing approaches.
- Experience working within Agile delivery frameworks and actively participating in Sprint-based delivery models.
- Strong knowledge of AWS networking, security architecture, identity federation and cloud governance best practices.
- Experience with cost management, tagging strategies and financial optimisation within AWS.
- Proven ability to work independently within a customer on-site environment and manage stakeholder expectations effectively.
- Scripting capability in at least one language (Python, Bash or similar).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage senior stakeholders on architecture trade-offs, risk mitigation and best practice implementation.
- Understanding and practical application of IT standards such as ITIL.
- Experience with IT compliance and risk management requirements (e.g. security, privacy, ISO27001).
- Demonstrated ability to analyse complex technical challenges and deliver pragmatic, scalable AWS solutions.
